Coding Method

The postcodes in the UK are made up of a mixture of letters and numbers. Its format is probably the most complex in the world. It can have the following six formats, where A represents letters (A-Z) and N represents numbers (0-9). The length of UK postcodes is at least five characters plus a space, and a maximum of seven characters plus a space.

Format Example
AN NAA M2 5BQ
ANN NAA M34 4AB
AAN NAA CR0 2YR
AANN NAA DN16 9AA
ANA NAA W1A 4ZZ
AANA NAA EC1A 1HQ

In addition, the special postcode"GIR 0AA" (which does not comply with the above six formats) is also legal.

(Note: In each format, there is a space before the last three characters.)

The postcodes in UK can be divided into four parts:

  1. Postal Area: the first letter or the first two letters
  2. Postal District: the characters between the letters of Postal Area and the space
  3. Postal Sector: the number after the space
  4. Delivery Point: the last two letters

For example, in the postcode EC1Y 8SY, EC represents the postal area, 1Y represents the postal district, 8 represents the postal sector, and SY represents the delivery point.
